Two Oregon couples came forward Tuesday to claim the second-biggest jackpot in U.S. lottery history: $340 million.
Lottery officials confirmed that Steve West, his wife, Carolyn, and his in-laws, Bob and Frances Chaney, held the winning ticket in Oct. 19 Powerball drawing. The two couples had gone in together on $40 worth of tickets.
They arrived at lottery headquarters to have the ticket verified and decide whether they wanted the money in an after-tax lump sum of $110 million, or 30 annual installments of about $7.6 million.

Underwater casino planned in Chinese gambling enclave of Macau

The battle for casino supremacy in Macau has moved to a new frontier.

An underwater casino hall with a capacity of 450 gaming tables and 3,000 slot machines will open in mid-2008, one of its developers Melco International Development Ltd. said in a statement Monday.
The casino "will be surrounded by water and marine life," said Melco Group managing director Lawrence Ho.
The $1-billion US resort will also house deluxe apartment blocks, 2,000 hotel rooms, a shopping mall and a 4,000-seat performance hall.
The resort will be located on Macau's Cotai strip, which developers hope to fashion as Macau's answer to the Las Vegas Strip, the statement said.

Macau is expected to surpass Las Vegas as the world's biggest gambling market in 2005, with the territory's casinos projected to bring in more than $5 billion in gambling revenue as newly affluent mainland Chinese flood to Macau to gamble.

In a miraculous recovery, Afleet Alex kept his balance after being knocked to his knees by Scrappy T at the top of the stretch and won the Preakness Stakes on Saturday. The frightening scene occurred as a full field of 14 3-year-olds turned for home. Scrappy T, ridden by Ramon Dominguez, went wide off the turn as the jockey was whipping left-handed, and the gelding drifted into the path of Afleet Alex, who was just behind.
Rose managed to stay on as Afleet Alex regained his momentum, neatly cut to the inside and went on to win the second leg of the Triple Crown.
Afleet Alex, the 3-1 favorite, returned $8.60, $5 and $3.20. Scrappy T, who held on for second despite a steward's review, paid $11.20 and $5.80. Giacomo, the third choice at 6-1, paid $4.80.

George Steinbrenner is coming to the Kentucky Derby with more than another World Series title on his mind.

'Racinos' spreading as aging tracks seek update

The hottest trend on the American gambling scene is a combination casino and horse track known as a "racino."
Gamblers can bet on live and simulcast horse races, but also can play video gaming devices offering computerized versions of slots, blackjack, poker, keno and other casino games.
Unlike riverboats and resort-type casinos, racinos do not offer table games such as blackjack, high-stakes poker, roulette or craps.
According to the American Gaming Association, total revenue generated at 17 racinos in the six states in 2002 was about $2.1 billion. That's still relatively low in the overall gaming industry, gaming association officials said.
Though they blend two distinct forms of gambling, many racinos are more similar to casinos than racetracks.
